Vinpocetine was earlier considered as a man-made chemical resembling a substance found in the periwinkle plant Vinca minor. How ever Vinpocetine is not approved in the United States for pharmaceutical use, but it can be sold as a dietary supplement. Vinpocetine is widely marketed as a supplement for vasodilation and as a nootropic for the improvement of memory and cerebral metabolism, it is also been used in anabolic field to enhance performance.

But commercially vinpocetine is actually extracted from Voacanga seed or lesser periwinkle plant, which make it more safe for human consumptions.
