5-hydroxytryptophan, also known as 5-HTP, is a chemical by-product of the protein building block L-tryptophan.5-hydroxytryptophan(5-HTP) can not be got directly from food, but L-Tryptohan can be found in food like turkey, chicken, milk, potatoes, pumpkin, sunflower seeds, turnip and collard greens, and seaweed.
5-hydroxytryptophan(5-HTP) has been market as a a dietary supplement and medicine in treating depression or fibromyalgia. It is commercially extracted from from the seeds of the African plant Griffonia simplicifolia.

Side Effects and Dosage:
Hige dosage of 5-hydroxytryptophan(5-HTP) can be toxic so you should take advice from your health care provider. Generally recommendation is 50mg, 1-3 times per day. For anxiety or depression, the dose is 150 to 300 mg daily. 5-hydroxytryptophan(5-HTP) should not be given to children.
